Ai Measure the Gap

Pocket AR/LiDAR Metrology · Pro Spirit Level · Trade Specs

Point. Know. Build.

Built for the whole construction industry — tradespeople, main contractors, civil & MEP teams, quantity surveyors, architects, surveyors, and property professionals who need a verified site dimension in seconds.

Live on Google Play · iOS coming soon

Gapeye turns the smartphone in your pocket into a site-ready 3D measurement, levelling and trade specification tool. Choose Width, Height, Diagonal or 4-tap Cubed Volume (m³, litres & ft³): you tap each point on screen, your phone’s on-device AR/LiDAR and inertial sensors compute the reading with an indicative ± mm range (JCGM GUM), and Ask Ai then provides fitting advice and a regional trade materials & fixings list. Pro adds a Spirit Level that uses your phone’s motion sensors to show tilt in degrees and slope in mm per metre.

Available now on Google Play (Android); iOS App Store coming soon (in Apple review). Start with 2 free measurements before sign-up, unlock unlimited measuring on a free Basic account (with ads), or upgrade to Gapeye Pro (3.99/year) for the Spirit Level, unlimited Ask Ai, Measure & save and A4 PDF Job Sheets.

How it works

Three simple steps on site.

  1. Choose mode & scan

Open Gapeye and choose one of the 4 measuring modes: Width, Height, Diagonal or Cubed (4-tap volume). Allow camera access and move your phone slowly over the surface until you see “Surface found. You can place a point.”

  2. Tap each point

Aim the centre dot at the first point and tap, then move to the second point and tap. Your phone’s on-device AR/LiDAR geometry calculates the distance between your taps with a live indicative ± mm uncertainty range.

  3. Chain height, volume or Ask Ai

Add Height on the same screen, check Diagonal squareness in mm, tap 4 corners for Cubed volume (m³ & litres), or tap Ask Ai for fitment clearances and a trade-counter materials & fixings list.

With Gapeye Pro (3.99/year), check that a shelf, tile or pipe run is level or plumb with the Spirit Level (tilt in degrees and slope in mm per metre from your phone’s motion sensors), save measurements and photos locally offline in Measure & save (with cloud sync when online), and export stamped A4 PDF & CSV Job Sheets.

4 user-tapped measurement modes · on-device AR/LiDAR maths + subsequent AI advice

Four ways to measure — plus the Pro Spirit Level.

Choose your mode before you start. You tap each point on screen and your phone’s on-device AR/LiDAR camera and inertial sensors calculate distances, diagonals, squareness, 3D volumes and an indicative ± mm uncertainty range (JCGM GUM) — then Ask Ai provides subsequent fitting advice and materials lists. The Pro Spirit Level needs no tapped points: it reads your phone’s motion sensors.

  • WidthSide to side: structural masonry & stud openings, window reveals, alcoves, doors and gaps. Tap 2 points (offline on-device AR/LiDAR) or chain Height on the same screen.
  • HeightTop to bottom: floor-to-soffit heights, lintel bearings, door/window drops and RICS IPMS <1.5 m restricted headroom checks from your 2 tapped points.
  • DiagonalCorner to corner: 2-tap opposite corners or automatic √(W²+H²) with live Squareness / Out-of-Square frame-racking check in mm (u_d).
  • Cubed4-tap shared-corner volume: tap one corner, then the ends of length, height and depth for instant m³, litres and ft³ (concrete, screed, trenches, rooms, skip & HVAC sizing, u_V).
  • Spirit Level (Pro)Check that a shelf, tile or pipe run is level or plumb, with tilt in degrees and slope in mm per metre. It uses your phone’s motion sensors, with a bubble, a level indicator, a calibrate/zero button and horizontal and vertical modes. Basic users see it locked with an Upgrade to Pro prompt.Available now on Android, coming soon to iPhone.

Peer-reviewed metrology & supported phones

Honest ± mm uncertainty on every reading.

Under international metrology standards (JCGM 100:2008 GUM), no physical measurement is complete without its uncertainty interval. Published peer-reviewed hardware literature defines the target design envelopes below, while Gapeye’s own formal multi-handset benchmark testing is ongoing prior to launch and every on-screen reading is shown as an indicative site estimate with a live ± mm range:

  • Layer 1 · LiDAR & ARKit / ARCore 3D surface raycasting (literature benchmark & target envelope): ±15 mm on tracked planes and ±25 mm on feature points in published smartphone LiDAR/AR studies, requiring 5 consecutive stable frames within 1 cm spread (aligned with RICS Measured Surveys Band D/E context; Univ. of Copenhagen & Politecnico di Torino benchmarks). Gapeye’s own across-device benchmark validation is ongoing.
  • Layer 2 · ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 Card Planar Homography (close-range target model): ±4 mm close-range coplanar design estimate using any standard 85.60 × 53.98 mm bank or ID card placed on the same plane as the target (Oxford/ANU Hartley & Zisserman DLT; Sensors 2025 0.052 mm controlled lab RMSE, not a field phone guarantee) — ideal for <50 cm checks and phones without LiDAR.
  • Layer 3 · JCGM GUM Quadrature & Monte Carlo Propagation: automatic first-order Taylor uncertainty for Diagonal u_d, Volume u_V and 40-trial Gaussian corner-jitter simulation.
  • Supported phones & units (v1.0): ARKit-compatible iPhones/iPads (automatic LiDAR on Pro models; multi-ray visual AR on non-LiDAR) and ARCore-compatible Android phones with gyroscope/accelerometer. Units: mm (default), cm, m, ft/in to 1/16, m³, litres, ft³, ° and mm/m.

Every exported A4 PDF Job Sheet stamps the exact measurement method (LiDAR/AR or ISO 7810 Card), timestamp and ± mm tolerance for your site file or client pack.

On-screen readings are indicative site estimates for rapid estimating, feasibility and site logging while formal multi-device benchmark validation completes. Always verify critical cuts, orders and structural bearings with a physical tape measure or certified level.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does Gapeye do?

We're developing an app that measures the width, height, diagonal, volume and level of things you can see – a TV, a table, a hole, a window, a door, a structural opening or a gap – using your phone's on-device camera, AR/LiDAR geometry and motion sensors. It includes 4 user-tapped modes — Width, Height, Diagonal (with live frame-squareness check in mm) and 4-tap Cubed volume (m³, litres and ft³) — each displayed with an indicative ± mm uncertainty range, plus the Pro Spirit Level, which uses your phone’s motion sensors to show tilt in degrees and slope in mm per metre. You tap each measuring point on screen and your phone calculates the size with an indicative ± mm uncertainty range; the app does not guess or auto-fill sizes by itself. Once you have tapped the points, Ask Ai can then provide practical installation advice and (on Pro) a tailored Materials & Fixings Offer based on your captured measurements and job photo.

Do I need to enter a measurement?

No. You move the phone slowly over the surface until it's ready, then aim the dot at the first point and tap, move across to the other point and tap. The app works out the distance between your taps.

What are the 4 measurement modes, and how does the Pro Spirit Level work?

Yes. Tap the first point, move across and tap the other for the width. Then tap the top, then the bottom for the height, or skip the height if you only need the width. Depth is optional. For Diagonal, tap two opposite corners (or measure Width + Height) to get √(W²+H²) plus a live Squareness / Out-of-Square check in mm. For Cubed, tap one shared corner and the ends of length, height and depth (4 taps) to get volume in m³, litres and ft³. With Gapeye Pro, the Spirit Level uses your phone’s motion sensors to show tilt in degrees and slope in mm per metre, with a bubble, a level indicator, a calibrate/zero button and horizontal and vertical modes; Basic users see it locked with an Upgrade to Pro prompt.

Does Gapeye find the edges for me?

Sometimes it may suggest edges and show “Edges found – tap to accept”. It's only a helper: it never fills in a size by itself, and you decide by tapping.

What if I tap the wrong point?

Tap Undo to remove the last point, or Start again to begin a new measurement.

Do I need a bank card?

No. Gapeye measures with your phone's camera and AR. For very tight spots, you can optionally lay a bank card on the same surface for extra help.

What does Ask Ai do?

Once you have tapped your measurement points on screen, Ask Ai sends the captured dimensions, the ± mm range, and (if attached) your site photo and note to provide practical fitting advice, clearance checks, and (on Pro) a tailored Materials & Fixings Offer with trade retailer links. The measurement itself is always calculated on your phone from your tapped points using AR/LiDAR and motion sensors — never guessed by the AI. Basic includes 5 free Ai answers after sign-up; Pro includes unlimited Ask Ai on our smarter model.

Which units will be available?

Gapeye supports millimetres (the default), centimetres, metres, and feet/inches down to 1/16 in, plus cubic metres (m³), litres, and cubic feet (ft³) for 4-tap Cubed volume, and degrees (°) plus slope in mm per metre for the Pro Spirit Level.

Which phones will it work on?

Gapeye v1.0 is built for ARKit-compatible iPhones and iPads (with automatic hardware LiDAR depth on iPhone Pro / iPad Pro models and multi-ray visual AR plane detection on non-LiDAR models) and ARCore-compatible Android phones, using the phone's motion sensors (gyroscope and accelerometer) for the Pro Spirit Level and an optional ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 bank/ID card reference mode for close-range planar checks (<50 cm). While formal multi-handset benchmark testing is being completed across devices, the final tested handset matrix will be published alongside launch.

How accurate will it be?

Published peer-reviewed literature benchmarks for smartphone LiDAR and ARKit/ARCore raycasting report typical target design envelopes of ±15 mm on tracked planes and ±25 mm on feature points (aligned with RICS Measured Surveys Band D/E ±10–25 mm workflow context), and ±4 mm for close-range coplanar ISO/IEC 7810 card homography. Gapeye's own formal multi-handset benchmark testing is currently ongoing prior to release; every on-screen reading is an indicative site estimate displayed with a live ± mm uncertainty interval (JCGM GUM) and must always be verified with a physical tape measure or certified spirit level before cutting, drilling, ordering, or structural work.

Can it measure very small gaps?

In target design models, close-range coplanar checks under 50 cm can use a standard bank or ID card (ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1, 85.60 × 53.98 mm) placed on the same surface as a 4-point scale reference (±4 mm target design estimate in published planar homography literature). Gapeye's formal minimum-gap and across-device validation is being completed prior to release, and every reading shows its live ± mm uncertainty range so you can confirm tight tolerances with a physical rule or tape.

Will it need an internet connection?

Core measuring works offline on site with no signal: point-to-point AR/LiDAR measuring (Width, Height, Diagonal, and 4-tap Cubed volume), the Pro Spirit Level (tilt in degrees and slope in mm per metre from your phone’s motion sensors), saving measurements and photos locally on your phone in Measure & Save, and exporting A4 PDF & CSV Job Sheets locally all work without internet. An internet connection is required for Ask Ai (cloud AI trade advice and the Pro Materials & Fixings Offer with retailer links), account sign-in and cross-device cloud sync, subscription purchase/restore verification, and loading sponsored ads on the Free Basic plan.

Will it be available worldwide?

Gapeye is available now on Google Play (Android) in many countries; the iOS App Store version is coming soon (in Apple review). Availability can vary by country and device.

When can I download it?

Available now on Google Play (Android); iOS App Store coming soon (in Apple review). Use the Google Play button on this page to install it on Android; the App Store button will be activated once Apple approves the iOS version. You get 2 free measurements before creating an account, unlimited measuring on the free ad-supported Basic plan, or Gapeye Pro (3.99 a year).

How much does it cost?

Basic is free with ads. Pro is 3.99 a year and removes ads and adds smarter Ai, PDF export and Measure & save.

Can builders’ merchants and tool brands advertise on Gapeye?

Yes. Basic is ad-supported and Ask Ai recommends regional trade materials at the exact moment a professional measures an opening. Merchants and brands can sponsor Basic in-app banners, Ask Ai trade partner links, or banner slots on gapeye.com — contact info@gapeye.com.
